Theater Department’s Fall Production ¡Bocón! Opens Nov. 9

Nov 01, 2018

¡Bocón!, a fable filled with humor, mysticism and song, tells the story of 12-year-old Miguel who flees a repressive military regime in Central America for Los Angeles. A natural storyteller and irrepressible “big mouth,” or bocón, Miguel loses his voice when his parents are taken and begins a metaphorical journey north to the City of Angels. Along the way he meets up with an unusual traveling companion, La Llorona, the legendary “Weeping Woman” of Central American and Mexican mythology.

“Choosing a play for young audiences that engages youth, without shying away from important subjects was important to me, “says director and CNM Theatre instructor E. Dani Belvin. “¡Bocón! is a very beautiful and magical story about an immigrant’s journey, a subject matter that is both old, and very modern and contemporary.”

CNM’s Theatre Department, which offers an associate degree in Theatre, creates theatrical productions that train students to use theatrical skill sets such as design, research, performance, and collaboration. The program introduces students to the basics of theatre, acting, and production.

¡Bocón! runs for two weekends on Friday and Saturday nights (November 9, 10, 16 & 17) at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees (November 11 & 18) at 2 p.m.  All performances will take place at CNM’s Coal Avenue Theatre, which is located on Coal Avenue between University and Buena Vista. General admission tickets are $5.

¡Bocón! is appropriate for the whole family.  For more information and tickets, visit www.cnm.edu/cat.
