Program Goals and Information
The goal of this program is to prepare medical assistants who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession. Students are advised to participate in the program full-time for three consecutive terms. Students not able to participate on a full-time basis for three consecutive terms should speak with an advisor or the Medical Assistant Program Director to develop a schedule that will help with their overall success.
Students must achieve all MAERB Core Curriculum psychomotor (skills) and affective (behavioral) competencies prior to graduating from the program. Students who started the program prior to the Summer 2023 term but have not graduated should speak to the program director about reentry requirements.

The Medical Assistant program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB).

Working as a Medical Assistant
Medical assistants are cross-trained to perform routine administrative and clinical duties in clinics, doctor offices, and other health care agencies. Medical assistants are multi-skilled in areas of medical office organization, patient care management, and health navigation.
Medical assistants are expected to have good job prospects. Nationally, employment of medical assistants is projected to grow 18 percent from 2020 to 2030. The growth of the aging baby-boom population will continue to increase demand for preventive medical services, which are often provided by physicians. As a result, physicians will hire more medical assistants to perform routine administrative and clinical duties, allowing physicians to see more patients.
An increasing number of group practices, clinics, and other healthcare facilities will also need support workers, particularly medical assistants, to complete both administrative and clinical duties. Medical assistants work mostly in primary care, a steadily growing sector of the healthcare industry.
