Early Childhood Multicultural Education

Early Childhood Multicultural Education offers concentrations in Birth - 3rd Grade Teacher, Program Administration, and Infant Family Studies.

The following concentrations in the Early Childhood Program each contain two courses that require field experience.

Birth - 3rd Grade Teacher

ECME 1109/1190: Curriculum Development through Play: Birth - Age 4*

  • This course requires students to complete 45 hours of field experience in an early childhood center working with children ages Birth – 4 years through the term.

ECME 2212/2290: Curriculum Development and Implementation: Age 3 - Grade 3*

  • This course requires students to complete 45 hours of field experience in an early childhood center or elementary school classroom working with students in Pre-K – 3rd grade through the term.
  • There are limited options for after school hours so students should plan their schedule to allow for observational hours to be completed sometime Monday – Friday between the hours of 8:00am – 3:00pm.

*These two field experiences must be completed in different settings with different age groups. If a student completes field experience for ECME 1109/1190 working with 4 year olds in an early childhood center, they will need to complete field experience for ECME 2212/2290 in a Kindergarten – 3rd grade setting. Often, students will need to get 2 separate background checks for these two courses. Students completing field hours in an early childhood center will need to complete a background check with CYFD. Background checks for students working in a K-3rd grade setting will be completed through Albuquerque Public Schools, Rio Rancho Public Schools or other local district depending on area.

  • For both of the courses in the Birth-3rd grade concentration students will receive an email with information on applying for a field placement shortly before the term begins.
  • All students will be required to fill out an online placement application in order to complete field hours.
  • All students taking the above listed courses in the Birth - 3rd grade concentration will be required to take and pass a background check. Students are responsible for paying the background check fees. Information about obtaining a background check will be included in the email students receive shortly before the term begins.
