Hope Garcia

Growing up next to the Gulf Coast, in Houston, TX, I exchanged the beach for miles of surrounding, flat farmland when I moved to Lubbock, TX and attended Texas Tech University.   While there, I was graduated with my BA and MA, both in Sociology, with minors in Business, and Higher Education, respectively.  I also worked in the Dean of Students Office, as well as the Office of Residence Life (both in the Division of Student Affairs).

After moving to beautiful, sunny New Mexico, I was enrolled as a Ph.D. student in the Department of Sociology, but unfortunately, pressing family responsibilities did not allow me to complete that course of study.I crossed over to the "dark side," or so say my former colleagues from Student Affairs, and began teaching (Academic Affairs) in 2007 at the University of New Mexico's Valencia Campus, and spent 5 years teaching at several UNM branches.  (The dark side is fun!)In 2011, I began working at CNM, and I love the small classes, where I get to know students more personally, as well as teaching in my own backyard.

Committee Work and Professional Interests:  I enjoy serving on the New Faculty Support Team, which designs and facilitates the New Faculty Institute (for newly-hired full-time instructors), as part of the orientation process. The NFST also coordinates professional development opportunities for Part-Time Faculty .Another area of interest to me is Course Design, as well as Best Practices in the Classroom. I served as a co-facilitator in a number of Course Design Institutes (Office of Support for Effective Teaching) at UNM, from 2007 to 2013. Additionally, I have presented on topics regarding learner-centered techniques.
