IT 1010 Challenge Exam

Individuals can earn college credit for IT 1010 at CNM by passing the Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC3), which is a three section exam. The three sections can be taken separately, but need to be completed within a two week period. Students will be tested on the most current versions of Windows and Microsoft Office available.

Exams will be collected 15 minutes prior to closing.

CNM highly recommends you take and pass the free practice exam before paying the $40 fee for taking the actual exam.

Practice Exam: There is a practice test available at the Assessment Centers. The practice exam is very similar to the actual exam. Each of the 3 sections contains 45 questions and is 45 minutes long. There is no fee to take the practice exam. Please consult Assessment Staff for more information.

Registration:  Students wanting to take the IC³ exam will need to register at one of the following Assessment Centers:

  • Main Campus SSC-204, (505) 224-3243
  • Westside Campus WS2-113, (505) 224-5382
  • Montoya campus TW-203, (505) 224-5761
  • Rio Rancho Campus room 102, (505) 224-4912

All offices are open Monday through Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. A $40 fee is due payable at the cashiers’ office at the Montoya, Westside and Main campuses, the Rio Rancho campus can only accept checks or money orders. This fee includes one free retake on each failed section. You must have a valid photo I.D. both to register and take the exam.  Students must wait 24 hours to retest.

Please allow 10 to 15 minutes to process your registration.

Section 1: Living Online (passing score 660; max. score 1000) This section covers networks and the internet, electronic mail, using the internet, the impact of computing, and the internet society.

Section 2: Key Applications (passing score 680; max. score 1000) This section covers common Windows program functions, Word processing functions, spreadsheet functions and presentation software.

Section 3: Computing Fundamentals (passing score 710, max. score 1000) This section covers computer hardware, computer software, and using the Windows operating system.

Testing Rules:

  • Each of the 3 sections contains 45 questions and is 45 minutes long.
  • All examinees must present a photo I.D. Acceptable types of I.D. include driver’s licenses, passports, military I.D.s and college issued I.D. cards.
  • No Personal items whatsoever are allowed in the test center including books, papers, phones, calculators, purses or backpacks.

Test Results: Passing scores on all 3 sections of the IC³ exam will give you a professional certificate from Certiport and 3 college credits from CNM for IT1010 (passing this exam does not qualify for financial aid residency requirements). You will receive a report of your scores upon completion of the exam and an official Certiport certificate will be mailed by Certiport to your home 3-4 weeks later.
