English as a Second Language (ESL)
The ESL program offers classes at various levels of English proficiency, as well as tutoring resources.
This program is for any non-native speaker of English (ages 16 and older) who is a New Mexico resident with an English level between Beginning (ESL level 2/3) and Advanced (ESL level 6).
Registration
- After filling out an application to the Adult Basic Education (ABE) program, you will be offered a class that matches your score on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). You will receive instructions to schedule TABE testing after your application is processed.
- There is a $10 registration fee per term. This fee can be waived if you are experiencing financial hardship.
Class Offerings and Schedule
- Classes are offered online and in-person at multiple CNM campuses.
- Both in-person and online classes are five weeks. There are two, five-week sessions in each term.
- There are no scheduled meeting days or times for online classes. This means you can work on the material when your schedule allows as long as you meet deadlines and required learning hours.
Career Pathways - Certified Nursing Assistant
CNM offers a Nursing Assistant certificate program for Adult Basic Education (ABE) students who wish to prepare for working in health care. The program is open to speakers of any language. The instruction is in English. The program is open to qualified Advanced ESL students with test scores 221 (Advanced) or above.

Career Pathways - Child Development Certificate
CNM offers a Spanish bilingual program in Early Childhood Multicultural Education. The program is open to ESL students with test scores of 181-235.

We offer ESL conversation groups for anyone wanting to improve their English speaking, in addition to tutoring, workshops, and open computer labs.
