CNM's sustainability goals are to reduce waste, water use, energy use, and carbon emissions while educating the CNM community about sustainable practices.
About Us
As part of CNM's overarching strategic direction, the Sustainability Committee is charged with supporting and promoting college-wide integration of sustainability concepts into the curriculum and across campuses in a meaningful way.
The committee’s ongoing objectives are to:
- Provide student learning opportunities via sustainability experiential learning projects.
- Increase student engagement in sustainability issues.
- Formalize student learning via sustainability education paths.
Sustainability Month at CNM
Throughout the month of March, CNM will host events and activities designed to raise awareness about environmental issues and how we can become better stewards of the earth. CNM invites you to attend these events and activities to learn about the environmental challenges facing our planet, innovative solutions to some of these challenges, and what you can do to help.

Event Title: 2023 Land & Water Summit Tour Stop

Description: Sites Southwest owner George Radnovich will discuss green stormwater infrastructure projects at CNM.
March 14
Event Title: "History of Water Resources in the Middle Rio Grande" Presentation by Adrian Oglesby
Location: Smith Brasher Auditorium, Room 101
Time: 12 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Description: Adrian Oglesby is the Director of the Utton Transboundary Water Center at UNM. In this presentation, he will provide an overview of the geologic evolution of the Middle Rio Grande Valley, a history of water management, and its impacts on the river and the ecosystem it supports.

Description: John Kay, Stormwater Quality Program Director at Sandia National Laboratory will provide an overview of watershed scale stormwater pollution.

Event Title: "Unconventional Sources of Water for New Mexico: Opportunities and Constraints" Presentation by Bruce Thomson
Location: Smith Brasher Auditorium, Room 101

Description: Bruce Thomson is Professor Emeritus and Research Professor in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at UNM. In this presentation, he will discuss the region's water resources, how we use them, and some of the constraints we face as we try to adapt our uses to match the supplies.

Event Title: "My Life as an Urban Biologist" Presentation by Virginia Thompson
Location: Smith Brasher Auditorium, Room 101
Time: 12 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Description: Dr. Virginia Thompson is an ecologist and science communicator by training and is currently the Urban Wildlife Biologist for the City of Albuquerque’s Environmental Health Department. A transplant from the Pacific Northwest to the Desert Southwest, she holds a BS in Biology and Certification in Wetlands Science and Management from the University of Washington and both an MS and Ph.D. in Biology from the University of New Mexico. She has had the privilege of working and studying in places ranging from the rocky shores of an island off the coast of Canada to the supervolcano that is the Valles Caldera. Learn more about how her experiences have shaped how she serves both the human and wild citizens of Albuquerque today.

History
- 2008: CNM President Katharine Winograd signed the Second Nature’s Climate Leadership Commitment (formerly ACUPCC).
- 2009-2012: The President’s Sustainability and Climate Commitment (PSCC) Task Force identified nine areas of impact and suggested specific actions for each area.
- 2012-2015: The Sustainability Curriculum Team (SCT) improved our sustainability efforts in academics, one of the nine areas of impact identified by PSCC. In the Summer of 2015, SCT was reorganized to become a faculty-led committee.
- 2015-Present: The Physical Plant and the Sustainability Committee continue our efforts to meet the CNM sustainability goals.
