Captioning Content

CNM provides captioning content access for viewers of all college media.

Media featuring captioned content can include, but is not limited to:

  • DVDs/CDs (audio)
  • all online media (YouTube, Vimeo, Media Site, etc.)
  • audio files (podcasts, radio)
  • webinars
  • online courses using Skype
  • Zoom
  • Adobe Connect
  • any other live/recorded sessions
  • all video/audio required of students through CNM Learn/D2L
  • Publisher & Mediasite created videos/online learning content

Our Commitment 

CNM is committed to ensuring an accessible and inclusive educational experience. All videos and content produced, owned, and/or shown by CNM, whether public facing or within the college, will be captioned and accessible for all viewers. We ensure that all audio is time synced with captions and/or transcripts. 

What are Captions

Closed Captions (CC) are a textual representation of the audio within a media file. Closed captions differ from subtitles because closed captions include text descriptions indicating speaker, background noise, other audio cues, grammatically correct punctuation, and 99% accurate spelling. 

Benefits 

All viewers, not only Deaf/hard of hearing viewers, benefit from captions and transcripts as effective learning tools. Closed Captions support English language mastery, second language learners, as well as improved vocabulary and spelling for all viewers. Views of a video are increased over forty percent when captions are an option and the video is ninety percent more likely to be watched to completion. 

Request Captioning & Other Options 

 1. Captioning via the Disability Resource Center

Send request to the Disability Services Manager to request captioning services with the following information: 

  • Course title and section 
  • An Mp4 file of the video audio through the email provided above, Dropbox, or shared through SharePoint

2. Captioning on your own through YouTube

  • This option is free, but please consider your time
    • Estimate about an hour of edit time for 10-minute video
  • Is the audio quality of my video good enough for automatic speech recognition (ASR) to decipher
    • Once ASR has added captions, you can edit them and add punctuation to your video.  
  • Good for short videos that are used for brief periods (ex. weekly FAQ videos)
