Modern Languages

Modern Languages courses develop listening, reading, and writing skills of languages other than English. Spanish, Portuguese, French and Arabic are some of the most widely spoken languages in the world. This program is useful for both the new and heritage speaker.

Educational Options

Modern Languages Program

Attaining a Spanish Language Certificate or an AA in Modern Languages with a concentration in Spanish demonstrates to future employers that you have achieved both oral and written Spanish proficiency and have an understanding of Hispanic cultures. This knowledge is highly beneficial for students planning to go into international careers as well as for those planning to work with Latino populations in the United States. Our certificate or AA degree is useful in such diverse fields as the arts, media, and entertainment industries, business, journalism, health services, tourism, government, social welfare, public administration and public education.

For additional information about the AA in Modern Languages, Spanish Concentration or the Spanish Language Certificate of Completion, contact Dr. Tomás Ruiz-Fábrega, at trfabrega@cnm.edu.

In addition, all courses will transfer to the University of New Mexico or any other four-year college in New Mexico.

CNM offers either a stand-alone Spanish Language Certificate of Completion, consisting of 17-18 credits in Spanish, or an Associate of Arts in Modern Language, Spanish Concentration.

In order to serve CNM students' needs and interests, we recognize previous language study and experience by offering a number of options to fulfill the Spanish coursework, such as the Heritage and Accelerated Tracks, as well as the *Spanish Placement Exam.

*The CNM Assessment Center's Spanish Placement Exam is a free test that will instantly determine what level of Spanish course you are ready to enroll in. And once you have taken the Spanish Placement Exam, you can receive from 4 - 14 credit hours for as little as $95 by taking the CLEP Spanish Exam, also offered through the Assessment Center.
