CNM Radiologic Technology Student Accepted into Prestigious National Leadership Program

Marissa Mendoza is one of two students from New Mexico to be chosen for the three-year American Society of Radiologic Technologist Student to Leadership Development Program

When Marissa Mendoza heard about the American Society of Radiologic Technologist (ASRT) Student to Leadership Development Program in one of her classes, she figured it wouldn’t hurt to apply. Fast forward to today and she is one of only two students chosen from New Mexico to participate in this three-year program and she attended her first ASRT conference back in June.

“I applied for the program because you just never know what’s going to happen,” she says. “I’m so glad I did, and I’ve already learned so much about ASRT and my opportunities in this field.”

The ASRT Student to Leadership Development Program (SLDP) is a three-year program that gives students the opportunity to attend educational sessions and conferences, grow their network, and learn about the world’s largest association of medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals.

Marissa attended her first SLDP Conference in Reno, Nevada this June where she learned more about the various processes and procedures the ASRT House of Delegates use to amend and establish professional standards of practice.

“It was so eye-opening to see how the ASRT creates and amends their bylaws. I really had no idea how long of a process it could be,” she explains. “I also learned about how I could become a delegate for New Mexico in the future, which is something I’m really interested in pursuing.”

Marissa will graduate from the CNM Radiologic Technology program next April, and is excited to start her career as a radiologic technician. She is also a first-generation student, and wants to encourage others to put themselves out there like she did.

“My advice is always to just go for it because you never know until you try,” she says. “And if you need help with anything, there’s always a resource, whether it’s at CNM or somewhere else, that can help you find your way.”
