This CNM Employee is Paving the Way for the Next Generation of LGBTQ+ Professionals

Bre Partida-Castillo works as the Special Assistant to CNM’s President and hopes to inspire CNM students and the community to show up in professional settings just as they are

Growing up in Houston, Texas, Bre Partida-Castillo (she/they) never saw someone who looked like them in a leadership position, especially in higher education. Now, Bre spends their days helping CNM’s executives and Governing Board members carry out the college's goals, mission, and values.

“When I was younger, I never saw or could even imagine someone in my position being open in their queerness or having vibrantly colored hair and a septum piercing,” Bre says. “I have been met with so much acceptance at CNM, and I love bringing my authentic self to the workplace.”

Bre found their way from Texas to New Mexico during their own educational journey. After completing their undergraduate studies, Bre enrolled at UNM to earn a master's degree in history. It didn’t take long for Bre to fall in love with Albuquerque, and they decided to stay and put down roots.

Shortly after graduating, Bre started their career at CNM. Their first position was in the Finance & Operations Department, and then in 2024 they transitioned to their current role of Special Assistant to the President and Governing Board Clerk.

In this position Bre handles everything from scheduling meetings to coordinating voting initiatives for general election bonds. Most importantly, Bre ensures that CNM students remain at the center of every project and conversation.

“My driving force is making sure everything CNM does benefits students in the long run,” they say. “I understand the value that education will bring to their lives, and I am always thinking about them.”

As they celebrate Pride this month and in their everyday life, Bre wants to continue to be a role model for other young, queer professionals and wants to encourage them to find their community.

“Having a mentor and finding community is so important because once you have someone on your side willing to listen, you can start to find your way forward,” they say. “And of course, if you’re a CNM student looking for guidance or support, my door is always open.”
