During her recent relocation to New Mexico, Maria Serafin-Iuen took a spontaneous detour onto a stretch of historic Route 66, where she discovered the town of Tucumcari. She quickly became captivated by the town’s enduring spirit and historical significance and set out to bring the town’s story to life through video storytelling.

Her documentary film, “Mile Marker Tucumcari: A Century on Route 66,” was developed during the immersive CNM Ingenuity Deep Dive Digital Media 12-week bootcamp. The bootcamp exposes students to the fundamental skills in digital media including digital animation, video production, and digital game design and development.

As the film’s cinematographer, editor, and narrator, Maria brought her creative vision to life through every stage of production. The 10-minute documentary artfully weaves archival research with original footage and personal narration, resulting in a beautiful tribute.

“Maria’s film is inspired and poetic – it is a stellar example of the creativity and technical talent of our Deep Dive students and alumni,” says Dr. Rod Sanchez, Director of the CNM Ingenuity Deep Dive Digital Media program.

Released in anticipation of Route 66’s upcoming 100-year anniversary, Maria hopes that the film will not only honor Tucumcari’s legacy but also inspire others to step off the interstate and experience the beauty, history, and community that continue to thrive along this iconic stretch of road.

The documentary has already drawn the attention of the City of Tucumcari and the Tucumcari MainStreet Program, reflecting its significance and resonance within the community.
