Hair Cuts and Connections: How This CNM Alumna is Building a Community Through Her Studio
For Natalie Rojo, caring for others has always been her calling. She considered being a nurse, then a midwife, and ultimately chose to become a hair stylist to harness her creativity and desire to help others feel good about themselves.
“When I decided to pursue a career in cosmetology, I was a young mom navigating my new life,” she says. “I realized I needed to live life for myself, and that’s when CNM came in and gave me the structure and support I needed to pursue a career that aligned with my creativity and purpose.”
In CNM’s Cosmetology program, Natalie learned essential skills like hair styling, scalp treatments, and coloring to prepare her for the state licensure exam. She also completed an externship at Sola Salon that not only helped solidify her technical knowledge, but also helped her prepare to enter the workforce.
After graduating in 2014, Natalie went on to work in several salons and studios, but always felt like something was missing. It wasn’t until the height of the COVID-19 pandemic that Natalie decided it was time to take a leap of faith and open her own hair studio.
Natalie officially opened Libre Hair Studio in 2021, with the mission of providing a safe place where everyone who walks through the door feels seen, heard, and fully themselves.
“The idea for the studio was born during a very tender and emotional chapter in my life,” Natalie says. “I was rebuilding both personally and professionally, and I heard a song lyric that said, ‘and nothing hurts anymore, I feel kinda free.’ That stayed with me and inspired the name of my salon. I wanted a space where anyone could be free to be themselves, so I built it.”
Now, Natalie has a team of six other stylists that specialize in everything from vivid hair coloring to gender-affirming haircuts. Additionally, Libre Hair Salon facilitates educational workshops geared towards licensed cosmetologists and students in cosmetology and barber programs.
“Expanding your skill set is so important in this industry, and I want to provide an inclusive, supportive environment where people can continue their educational journey," she says. “I also am focused on mentorship and helping other stylists find their confidence and voice.”
As she reflects on her journey, Natalie is thankful for the support, guidance, and community she found during her time at CNM. She also wants to encourage others to start where they are and believe in themselves.
“You don’t have to have it all figured out to begin, just be open to learning, ask questions, and stay curious,” she says. “And most importantly, be kind to yourself during the process. Growth takes time, and the beauty industry is one where your uniqueness is your superpower.”
