How Dance Can Help Heal Loss

A new play put on by CNM’s Department of Theatre and Dance combines storytelling and flamenco to explore themes of grief and healing through movement

CNM’s Department of Theatre and Dance is excited to host the play “Heart Song” from March 25-29 in the Coal Avenue Theater on Main Campus. The production uses song, dance, and dialog to tell the story of Rochelle, a woman navigating the loss of her mother.

“This play is perfect for CNM because we offer both theater and dance classes, allowing students to apply what they’ve learned,” says Bridgit Lujan, the play director who’s also a CNM flamenco instructor.

Rochelle is a middle-aged Jewish woman navigating the loss of her mother. With the guidance of her massage therapist, she is convinced to take a flamenco class with other middle-aged women. Through the class, Rochelle gains a deeper understanding of sisterhood, faith, and her inner voice.

For Jocelyn DeHass, a part-time CNM Anthropology instructor and CNM student, being cast in the role of Rochelle was an important reintroduction to the stage.

“When I auditioned, I didn’t think I’d be cast, and here I am in the lead role and getting back on stage after almost 10 years,” she says. “I connect with this character quite a bit. I understand her grief, her loss, and her ability to be a wise cracker through it all.”

Marisol Porras, a CNM graduate and flamenco dancer, is excited to bring the story to life through movement.

“Flamenco is used in the play to add an artistic element and help move the story forward,” she says. “This story is also very heartfelt and will resonate with anyone who has experienced loss and has looked for ways to deal with that loss.”

As Bridgit and the cast and crew prepare for the production, they’re looking forward to sharing the final product with friends, family, and the CNM community.

“This production has it all, and I’m excited for each of those layers to come together to not only showcase the story, but also each of our outstanding cast members,” Bridgit says.

“Heart Song” takes place March 25-29. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. every day except Sunday, March 29, which will start at 2 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door on the day of the show; same-day walk-ins welcome while seat availability lasts.
