2024-2025 FAFSA Process

Learn more about the new FAFSA process, what to expect, and how to stay informed.

The New FAFSA Process

The initial launch of the new 2024-25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) has begun. During the FAFSA application period, students and families will be accessing the FAFSA form as the Department of Education monitors the website for performance and functionality. Expect the Department of Education to initiate pauses for site maintenance and make technical updates as it addresses current technical issues.

When the issues with the new FAFSA are resolved, it will be more user friendly and more simplified than the previous FAFSA. However, if you have used the previous FAFSA, the new FAFSA will bring changes for you, your family, and your chosen schools.

Guidance on Glitches

Many students and families across the country, including in New Mexico, have been experiencing issues with the new system, such as screens freezing and problems with contributors trying to input information.

The Department of Education is working to fix the issues, but until then, please be aware that you may encounter challenges when filling out your FAFSA for the 2024-25 academic year that begins with the 2024 Fall Term. CNM will continue to update this page and provide guidance as we learn more. The Department of Education will also communicate updates.

Beginning the FAFSA Process

To prepare for completing the FAFSA gather your necessary documents. Be sure to have your social security number, tax information, and any other relevant financial documents on hand. Please note, CNM's Federal School Code is 004742.

CNM has dedicated staff ready to assist you through the steps below. Please visit the Financial Aid Outreach website for more information or to schedule an appointment.

  • Create an FSA ID: Before starting the application, you need to create a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID. This serves as your electronic signature and ensures the security of your information.
  • Visit the official FAFSA website and access the FAFSA application
  • Complete the FAFSA form. Follow the prompts and provide accurate information. Double-check for any errors before submitting your application.
  • Once the application is complete, you will receive a confirmation email including an estimated Student Aid Index and Pell Grant eligibility.
