CNM to Showcase Programs, College Life to High School Students Friday

During CNM’s annual College Day, high school students will get hands-on with programs and career pathways
February 05, 2020

Main Campus—especially Ted Chavez Hall, the JS Building and nearby parking lots—will be significantly more crowded this Friday. That’s because 2,000 high schoolers from across central New Mexico are scheduled to attend CNM’s annual College Day.

Faculty members from many of CNM’s programs will be leading students through up-close and hands-on activities that showcase programs and help them learn about the diverse degree and certificate options offered by CNM. The goal is to provide prospective students with an insider’s view on how CNM can help them achieve their higher education and career goals.

“College Day is a great way to present higher education in an accessible way,” says Meredith Tucker, who works in CNM’s Outreach and Recruitment Services department. “It’s also really important for first-generation students who might feel overwhelmed. College Day shows them what they can expect and helps them understand that a college degree is absolutely attainable.”

Many of the visiting high schoolers will have an opportunity to meet with current CNM students to ask questions about classes and life at CNM. During their tours, students will also be able to use many of CNM’s facilities, such as the high-fidelity Simulation Lab that supplements hands-on learning in healthcare programs.

As an added bonus, local business and industry representatives will be available to explain how an education from CNM can set students up for a well-paying job. Some of the organizations that will attend include the Albuquerque Film Office, B&D Industries, and Wagner Mechanical.

“It’s great for students to be able to meet with these representatives and see what they can do with a degree from CNM,” Meredith says.

In addition to the many interactive activities, there will be a Resource Fair set up outside the Student Resource Center that will have information regarding admissions, financial aid and registration.
