When you walk into FUSE Makerspace in downtown Albuquerque, it feels a little bit like Santa’s workshop. You hear sounds of hammering and grinding while FUSE members and CNM students work hard to handcraft items to sell at this year’s Mother’s Day Maker Market, which will be held on Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 101 Broadway N.E. Suite 3100.

“They’ve all been working really hard,” says Manny Rubio, CNM Ingenuity Operations Technician at FUSE. “There are going to be some really unique items at the Maker Market on Saturday. Everything from jewelry to pottery to screen printed items and even some furniture pieces.”

In addition to the uniquely crafted items being sold at the market, patrons will get to enjoy the tasty frozen treats from the Pop Fizz Paletas food truck.

CNM students in the Bench Jewelry Certificate Program will be setting up a table where they will sell pieces that they’ve made during the Spring Term. Student Marco Rivera says that working in the FUSE Makerspace has continued to spark his passion for making jewelry.

“I never thought I’d be into making jewelry as a career,” says Marco. “I took the class just for fun but then I got to experience everything here at FUSE. The resources available here allowed me to grow my technique and fine-tune my methods.”

Marco says while working at FUSE Makerspace he has built professional relationships with local organizations like Rio Grande Jewelry Supply, which is one of the biggest manufacturers and distributors of jewelry materials in the country.

“We’ve built a really close connection with them. A lot of my classmates who have finished the certificate program have been hired by them,” says Marco.

FUSE MakerSpace is powered by CNM Ingenuity and is a space where community members and CNM students can work with high-tech tools that allow them to design, prototype, and create manufactured works. The space has resources like screen printers, 3D printers, jewelry casting, laser cutting and much more.

Join us on Saturday in the FUSE Makerspace parking lot and get your mom a unique, one-of-a-kind gift.
